As Senior Director of Research at Caribou Digital, I am a researcher, author, and consultant focused on advancing digital inclusion in the developing world. In 2017-2018 I am an Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

My projects often combine (quantitative) market and business models research with (qualitative) applied ethnographic methods. I like to hang out with the "Digital Development" and  ICTD/ICT4D “Information Technology for Development“ communities.

Previously, I was a researcher in the Technology for Emerging Markets Group at Microsoft Research in Bangalore, India, a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and a consultant with the Monitor Group and its spin-off, the OTF Group.

I have a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Communication Theory and Research.

You can reach me at and/or follow me as @jcdonner on Twitter. I live along the marathon route, just outside of Boston, MA, USA.
